Mobile Mine Water Management — on a Skid
The ROTOMAC Mine Dewatering System (MDS) is a complete, skid-mounted mobile unit engineered specifically for the demands of underground and open-cast mining environments — where groundwater ingress must be controlled quickly, reliably, and at significant depth or distance from the surface.
The MDS integrates a holding and settling tank, a robust ROTOMAC progressive cavity pump, a prime mover, localised controls, and all connecting pipework on a single compact baseplate. Everything is pre-assembled and factory-tested — so the unit is ready to operate immediately upon deployment to site.
The compact skid design enables easy transport by forklift or crane between mine sections — making the MDS a truly mobile ground water management solution that goes wherever the mine goes.
Why progressive cavity pump? Mine water typically contains suspended solids, grit, and abrasive particles that rapidly destroy centrifugal pump impellers. ROTOMAC's PC pump handles these solids-laden fluids reliably — with no impeller wear, consistent flow, and dramatically lower maintenance frequency in demanding underground conditions.
Four Stages of Mine Water Removal
From water collection to surface discharge — the MDS handles every stage of the dewatering process automatically, with localised controls and no need for external support.
Mine Water Collection
Groundwater and mine water flows or is directed into the MDS holding tank via suction pipework at the dewatering point within the mine.
Solids Separation
The integral holding tank allows oversized solids, rock debris, and coarse grit to settle out — protecting the pump from excessive wear and blockage from large particles.
PC Pump Conveys Water
The ROTOMAC PC pump draws water from the settling tank and conveys it through the discharge pipeline — reliably handling suspended fines and solids at up to 40 m³/h and 24 bar.
Surface Discharge
Dewatered mine water is discharged to the surface, a sump, or a treatment system — leaving the mine working area clear and safe for continued operations.
Three Features That Define the MDS
Each salient feature of the ROTOMAC MDS addresses a real operational challenge faced by mine dewatering teams — making the system faster to maintain, easier to move, and adaptable to any site requirement.
The MDS is designed for quick maintenance in demanding underground environments where access is restricted and time is critical. The skid layout and quick-access construction mean servicing can be performed by a single operator without specialist tools or lifting equipment.
- Quick maintenance construction gives fast, tool-free access to pump internals
- Skid design keeps all components at a single, accessible working level
- Settling tank is easily accessed for cleanout without removing pipework
- ROTOMAC genuine spare parts — rotors, stators, seals — available from stock with fast nationwide delivery
- PC pump's simple 3-component design (rotor, stator, couplings) minimises parts count and servicing complexity
In mining operations, the dewatering point changes as the mine progresses. The MDS compact design gives the unit true mobility — it can be repositioned quickly by forklift or crane as underground workings advance, without requiring permanent installation or civil works at each location.
- Compact skid footprint fits within standard mine roadway dimensions and access routes
- Forklift or crane lifts via base skid — no special lifting attachments needed
- Can be redeployed to a new section within hours, not days
- No permanent civil foundations required — deploys on any flat, stable surface
- Self-contained unit needs only power connection and discharge hose at new location
No two mine dewatering applications are identical — water inflow rates, discharge distances, solids content, and available power sources all vary by site and by level. ROTOMAC designs the MDS pump and settling tank specifically for each customer's flow rate and pressure requirement within the standard operating range.
- Pump selection matched to required flow rate — from small inflows to up to 40 m³/h
- Discharge pressure configured up to 24 bar for long-distance or high-head pumping
- Holding and settling tank sized to match water inflow and required retention time
- Electric motor or diesel prime mover options for electrified and non-electrified sections
- Stator elastomer selection for mine water chemistry and temperature conditions
Why the ROTOMAC MDS?
Mine dewatering is a safety-critical operation. When groundwater ingress is not controlled, it threatens personnel, equipment, and the structural integrity of the mine. The ROTOMAC MDS is engineered to make that control reliable, fast, and simple.
Built for Mine Conditions
The MDS is specifically engineered for underground and open-cast mining environments — handling abrasive, solids-laden mine water that quickly destroys conventional pump types.
Immediate Deployment
Arrives pre-assembled, pre-piped, and factory-tested — connects to power and discharge pipework on site and is operational within hours of arrival, with no construction works required.
PC Pump Reliability
ROTOMAC's PC pump handles suspended grit and solids without cavitation or impeller damage — proven in Indian mining operations since the company's founding in 1967, when mining was the original application.
Follows the Mine
As the mine advances, so does the MDS. The compact skid is designed to be quickly relocated — by forklift or crane — to follow the active dewatering point without any permanent installation.
Lower Total Cost
Low maintenance requirements, fast servicing, no civil works, and ROTOMAC's genuine spare parts availability combine to deliver a significantly lower total cost of ownership than conventional fixed dewatering installations.
Customised to Your Site
Pump and tank are sized to your specific flow rate, pressure head, solids content, and power availability — ensuring the MDS performs optimally under your exact site conditions from day one.

Typical Applications
The ROTOMAC MDS is suited to any mining or groundwater management scenario where solids-laden water must be removed reliably, quickly, and from a location that may change over time.
Underground Coal Mining
Dewatering of working sections and galleries where groundwater inflow is continuous and water contains fine coal particles and rock fines. The MDS advances with the face as mining progresses.
Mineral & Metal Mining
Copper, iron ore, gold, and mineral mines where water management at depth is a continuous operational requirement. MDS handles abrasive mineral-laden water without accelerated wear.
Open-Cast & Quarry Sites
Rainfall and groundwater accumulate in open pit benches and working floors. The MDS can be rapidly positioned at the lowest point and relocated as the pit deepens or expands laterally.
Tunnelling & Civil Construction
Tunnelling operations encounter groundwater inflows that must be controlled continuously. The mobile MDS travels with the tunnelling front, removing water efficiently without permanent installations.
Emergency Flood Response
When unexpected water ingress or flooding threatens mine operations, the MDS can be rapidly deployed to the affected section to remove water and restore safe working conditions quickly.
Construction Site Dewatering
Foundation excavations, basements, and underground infrastructure projects require temporary dewatering. The compact MDS moves from site to site as works progress with minimal setup at each location.
